Learning at Your Own Pace

Our instrument building courses are designed to provide a focused and rewarding learning experience in a supportive workshop environment. Whether you prefer a flexible weekly schedule or a more immersive full time option, each pathway offers individual guidance and the time needed to complete your instrument to a high standard.

Course Format

Courses run on a flexible, week to week basis, with no fixed time limit. Students can attend as often as they like within the workshop timetable, allowing each person to progress at a pace that suits them.

Most students choose to attend one session per week, while others prefer two or three sessions depending on their availability and goals. Each day can be booked as a full session from 10am to 5pm, or divided into a morning session from 10am to 1pm and an afternoon session from 2pm to 5pm.

“Lloyd was the reason my guitar got done - couldn’t have built it without Lloyd, wouldn’t have built it without Lloyd.  With great patience and humour Lloyd balances hand-holding and tuition while drawing out the best of the learner”

One Month Intensive Course

For students who would like to focus fully on their project, we offer a one month intensive course running five days per week, with the option, at no extra cost, to attend Saturday sessions if desired.

This immersive format allows you to work steadily and complete your instrument within a shorter timeframe, while still receiving individual guidance and support.

Intensive Course Fees

To begin the course, a materials deposit of €550.00 is required in advance. This deposit is separate from and in addition to the course fee and covers the cost of tonewoods and essential materials.

The tuition fee for the four week intensive programme is €2,200.00, payable separately from the deposit.

In total, the full cost of the intensive course is €2,750.00
(€550.00 deposit + €2,200.00 tuition).

Payment is made as follows:

  • €550.00 materials deposit (payable in advance to secure your place)

  • €1,100.00 on commencement, with the remaining balance payable on the day of completion

  • OR four weekly instalments of €550.00

All fees must be paid in full by the day of completion.

Courses are charged at a rate of €15.00 per hour.

  • €45.00 per half day session

  • €90.00 per full day session

Sessions are booked and paid for in blocks of three. This helps students maintain steady progress and allows the workshop timetable to be organised effectively.

Materials and Deposit

A deposit of €550.00 is required to secure a place and begin the course. This includes all of the main tonewoods and essential materials needed for your instrument, allowing you to focus fully on learning and building from the very start.

As ukuleles require fewer materials than larger instruments, a reduced materials deposit applies to ukulele builds. Please get in touch for current pricing and availability.

A full list of available wood options and specifications will be provided before the course begins, so you can choose materials that best suit your instrument and preferences.

Students are asked to provide their own machine heads, strings, and a suitable case for their finished instrument. These can also be purchased through the workshop if needed, with guidance available when selecting suitable options.

Not Sure Which Option Is Right for You?

If you are unsure whether the flexible weekly course or the intensive programme would suit you best, you are very welcome to get in touch and have a chat. We are always happy to discuss your goals and help you choose the most suitable pathway.

“I had the pleasure to be mentored by Lloyd while building my first acoustic guitar. His passion for lutherie, his pedagogical approach and his patience helped me build the instrument of my dreams although I had no previous experience with woodwork. Thank you Lloyd, I’m looking forward to building the next one!” Best of luck and hope to see you in Roundwood. Let me know when you are doing electrics :)”
